HEART 9/11 is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization founded by Bill Keegan, a retired Port Authority Police Department Lieutenant who served as Operations Commander for the W.T.C. Rescue/Recovery Mission. The organization is composed of veteran police officers, fire fighters, construction trade union workers, surviving families of those killed on September 11, 2001, and others. Our anti-hunger coalition, the largest in Essex County, has been providing emergency food to individuals and families in need since 1980. MEND is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. MEND works to alleviate hunger in Essex County by supporting our network of food pantries. The Union Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1917 by a group of faithful men and women, many whom were from Blakely, Georgia who had migrated to Newark, NJ; in order to take advantage of greater socio-economic opportunities.
