The Sisterhood of Empowerment

The Sisterhood of Empowerment, led by Pat Brown, administers aid to the homeless and less fortunate by coordinating volunteer efforts and donations for the greater good. For the holiday season, they’ve put together a “Rep Your City” drive along with co-sponsors Assemblyman Jamel C. Holley (D-20th Legislative District) and Councilwoman Andrea Staten (Roselle) to create Blessing Bags for the homeless. The Blessing Bags include cold weather gear (hat, gloves, clothing and blankets) along with essential toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, first aid kits, razors, soap, deodorant), socks and snacks. Many thanks to all the volunteers, which included civil servants Mr. Holley, Ms. Staten and Roselle Recreation Manager Donald Shaw; along with Pat Brown and many volunteers from the Sisterhood.

The Sisterhood also threw a Christmas Party for children with the Elizabeth Coalition for the Homeless. Santa was in attendance, along with gifts provided by the Sisterhood in partnership with CDP.

The Sisterhood has pulled together volunteers for other events and needs, such as a Homeless Drive at Newark Penn Station. During the bitterly cold months, volunteers assemble sandwiches, make hot homemade soup, and distribute meals along with additional necessities such as clothing, socks, hats, underwear and blankets.

The Sisterhood was also on hand this past Easter to ensure a joyous holiday was shared with homeless families in shelters. Thanks to generous donations and kind volunteers, 160 baskets were assembled and distributed to Elizabeth and Newark YMCA housing families. A a special thanks is in order to Danielle from Rivers of the Living Waters Church in Newark, NJ. She not only arranged the event but is pictured below with one the happy recipients of her lovely face painting artistry.
